The analysis of soils and sediments has recently developed due to the growing awareness of the environment. This has resulted in increasing levels of legislation and guidance controlling development on potentially contaminated land.

An industrial sites can be contaminated due to the industrial process carried out in them. The developer needs to be aware of the level of contamination they may inherit in order to satisfy the legislation and accurately estimate the remediation and development costs and satisfy the legislation.
